Community Based Instruction (CBI) involves the teaching of functional skills in the context in which they will be used. Students and staff select settings from in the community that link to students educational goals and/or Personals Futures Action Plan.
Students may also participate in Community Referenced Instruction (CRI) which involved practicing all of the skills required for CBI in the school setting.
Examples of CRI and CBI include:
- creating a shopping list and purchasing the items
- ordering and eating at a café or restaurant or
- visiting and enjoying public spaces like museums and galleries.
